The Choir of St Mary's Church

 

The parish Church of St. Mary has had a tradition of choral singing for over 200 years with church records making reference to singers in 1808 and the appointment of a choirmaster in 1825. Ladies were first admitted in 1950.

The Choir has been affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music for many years. This choral tradition continues today under the direction of organist and choirmaster, Andrew Noble (Dip.R.C.M (Teach) A.R.C.M (PG) L.T.C.L) who was appointed in 1987.

Andrew Noble

ANDREW NOBLE studied at the Royal College of Music under John Barstow and Ruth Gerald.  He was awarded numerous prizes including the Major Van Someren Godfrey Memorial Prize, the Clytie Mundi Memorial Prize, the Douglas Whittaker Chamber Music Prize and the Ted Moss Lieder Prize.  In his final year he was awarded the Constant and Kit Lambert Prize for students of exceptional merit.

 

Andrew has taken part in masterclasses with eminent musicians such as Dame Janet Baker, Sarah Walker, Graham Johnson, Geoffrey Parsons and Roger Vignoles.  He received acclaim for his piano accompanying, winning the ISM Accompanist of the Year Competition, a scholarship to study with Roger Vignoles, and the Gerald Moore Award for Accompanists of Lieder.  Andrew has given recitals in the Wigmore Hall, St James’s Piccadilly and St Martin in the Fields, as well as broadcasting live on Radio 3 and Classic FM.

 

Andrew has taught extensively around the North of England.  He became Organist and Choirmaster of St Mary’s, Worsbrough in 1987, where he remains committed to developing this church’s long-established choral tradition.
